Student Response Systems - Socrative

I used Socrative a few years ago when my school subscribed to MasteryConnect, a program that connected assessments directly to standards. Socrative gave more options for types of questions asked (multiple choice, true/false, short answer). The short answer questions provided greater opportunity to discuss answers amongst each other. Socrative works very similarly to Kahoot. The interface is not as “fun,” and is more straightforward to answering questions. They also connect directly to standards, which is very telling of a student’s progress over time. Socrative can be used for both formative and summative assessment. It was helpful to have Socrative connect the assessments to standards as education is very much standards based and requires teachers to link every lesson to a standard. What I found most challenging was the fact that there were too many standards to choose from. Once a particular set of standards was selected, I could not filter out the standards I ...

Student Response Systems - Kahoot

Student response systems are a good example of formative assessment. Formative assessments are becoming increasingly important in checking for students’ understanding. Response systems allow for quick, easy data collection and is able to compile that data for download. They also fall in line with the Danielson Framework for Teaching in Domain 3: Instruction. Domain 3 is one of the two that NYCDOE teachers are evaluated on. With the amount of access to technology increasing in every classroom, response systems are allowing for greater assessment in the classroom on a regular basis. Response systems do not require separate remotes or devices. Apps can be downloaded to devices or used on a browser. When I was in college, I remember needing to purchase a special clicker device (Turning Technology) to respond to a series of questions in class that served as both assessment and attendance.  Over the next three weeks, I will introduce the following student response ...

Open Ed

Open Ed is a educational library that connects specific learning standards to online activities. I have sampled and reviewed a few of the resources based on Math standards grades 9-12. Completing The Square - YourTeacher.com - Algebra Help             This video is a tutorial on solving a problem to complete the square. The teacher in the video has a monotone voice and is not very engaging. However, he does go slow enough for a viewer to follow the work done in the video. I think that the resource would have been more helpful for additional examples for viewers to practice and then check their answers based on the work done in the video. It would have also been helpful for additional practice problems attached to the video for viewers to work on. I would not assign this video to students in connection to any assignment, but would post for students to have as a resource if help is needed on these types of probl...
