Open Ed
Open Ed is a educational library that connects specific learning standards to online activities. I have sampled and reviewed a few of the resources based on Math standards grades 9-12.
Completing
The Square - YourTeacher.com - Algebra Help
This
video is a tutorial on solving a problem to complete the square. The teacher in
the video has a monotone voice and is not very engaging. However, he does go
slow enough for a viewer to follow the work done in the video. I think that the
resource would have been more helpful for additional examples for viewers to
practice and then check their answers based on the work done in the video. It
would have also been helpful for additional practice problems attached to the
video for viewers to work on. I would not assign this video to students in
connection to any assignment, but would post for students to have as a resource
if help is needed on these types of problems.
Solving Quadratic Equations Assessment
This
resource provides five problems for students to solve. After solving them,
students receive their results and are told to focus their practice on the
problems missed. Back on the assessment page, the correct answers are shown
with rationale for the correct answers and rationale for why the other answer
choices are incorrect. I like this resource because it is short and covers
different types of problems to solve ranging from easy to difficult. A student
that uses this assessment would know exactly which type of problem they would
need to work on based on his or her results. I would use this resource and
assign it to students to get a quick understanding of where they are with
solving quadratic equations.
Systems of Linear Equations – from Duke
University
This
resource is a tutorial on how to solve systems of equations. There are many problems
and questions with room for students to work through. I did not see an answer
key or explanation of answers, which would be helpful if students are using
this resource independently. In a classroom setting, this resource would be
helpful to work through the problems as a class and have students present their
findings and be able to check their work against their peers. I think that this
would be a good resource for the classroom and not for independent practice.
Arithmetic with Polynomials
This resource is a teaching guide on how to teach
arithmetic with polynomials. There is a worksheet and answer key attached. It
provides an overview of the standard, other aligned resources, and tips on
teaching this standard. I think that this resource is helpful for teachers who
may struggle with coming up with more practice for students on a particular
topic. It is helpful to read some of the tips for teaching the topic as I
always find it useful to collaborate with other teachers on certain topics.
Having this resource as a “collaborator” increases the possible creativity for
teaching this topic.
Graphing
Systems of Linear Inequalities - Example 2
This
video is a teacher’s tutorial of graphing inequalities. The teacher’s voice is
clear and engaging. The writing on the whiteboard he is filming is clear and
provides clear instruction as he is writing on the board. It is very similar to
the way Khan Academy videos work. He only goes through one example, which is
helpful in showing the over all concept, but I think showing multiple examples
and having users work on the problems at the same time would be more helpful
for practice. I would give this resource to students who are in need of extra
practice, but not as a classroom activity.
