Student Response Systems - Socrative

I used Socrative a few years ago when my school subscribed to MasteryConnect, a program that connected assessments directly to standards. Socrative gave more options for types of questions asked (multiple choice, true/false, short answer). The short answer questions provided greater opportunity to discuss answers amongst each other. Socrative works very similarly to Kahoot. The interface is not as “fun,” and is more straightforward to answering questions. They also connect directly to standards, which is very telling of a student’s progress over time. Socrative can be used for both formative and summative assessment.

It was helpful to have Socrative connect the assessments to standards as education is very much standards based and requires teachers to link every lesson to a standard. What I found most challenging was the fact that there were too many standards to choose from. Once a particular set of standards was selected, I could not filter out the standards I did not want to address. So, for many of the assessments, there were only 1 or 2 standards addressed, but on the master list of scores, all of the standards were listed and I would need to scroll all the way over to find the standards that I graded.

In the end, as a standards based application, I think Socrative can be very useful for teachers if the time is taken to sort through the standards. I also think that if there was a way to filter out the standards that are not used, it would make the app much more user friendly.
