Remind Messaging App
Remind messaging app is an easy way to send messages to
students and parents. It looks like a useful app for quick and easy communication. Communication with families is key and the use of technology is the primary vehicle for communication. Email is helpful, but many times, emails are incorrect or not checked frequently enough to have consistent communication with families. Remind allows for group conversations. Facilitating these group
conversations and sending pictures/files would be helpful, especially if they
needed to be sent to large groups of people.
One of the quotes from a user said
“Most of my
students have come up to me and told me that my Remind messages were the
only reason they completed the assignment because they would have
forgotten about it over a long weekend.” Although it is good that students
completed the assignments, I worry that students would become too dependent on
receiving reminder messages about due dates. Would this dependency cause a
decrease in self-motivation and organization? What happens if they had a
teacher that did not use Remind? Will they be unable to keep a
planner/organizer with due dates? As with all EdTech tools, Remind is meant to
make communication between schools and families more transparent, which is
necessary, but I hesitate its usefulness in teaching students about
responsibility and independence in the future.
