Remind Messaging App

Remind messaging app is an easy way to send messages to students and parents. It looks like a useful app for quick and easy communication. Communication with families is key and the use of technology is the primary vehicle for communication. Email is helpful, but many times, emails are incorrect or not checked frequently enough to have consistent communication with families. Remind allows for group conversations. Facilitating these group conversations and sending pictures/files would be helpful, especially if they needed to be sent to large groups of people.  One of the quotes from a user said “ Most of my students have come up to me and told me that my Remind messages were the only reason they completed the assignment because they would have forgotten about it over a long weekend.” Although it is good that students completed the assignments, I worry that students would become too dependent on receiving reminder messages about due dates. Student Response Systems - Plickers

Image
The last student response system I will write about is Plickers.  Plickers are commonly used among math teachers at my school. Students hold up cards for different multiple choice questions and teachers use their phone to scan the room. Plickers collects their answers and provides data to the teacher. I think Plickers give students a more tangible way to answer the questions without needing them to be on a device. Plickers gives teachers real-time data. Because students do not need devices, they do not need to take time to log in. Each Plicker card is assigned to a student (assigned by the teacher) and can be used across multiple classes. Engagement is high and quality data on students’ understanding is able to be collected. www.plickers.com Plickers is a quick summative assessment that allows teachers to know whether they can move on from a topic or continue teaching. Students find it more engaging than using a thumbs up/down/side, or 1/...

Student Response Systems - Socrative

I used Socrative a few years ago when my school subscribed to MasteryConnect, a program that connected assessments directly to standards. Socrative gave more options for types of questions asked (multiple choice, true/false, short answer). The short answer questions provided greater opportunity to discuss answers amongst each other. Socrative works very similarly to Kahoot. The interface is not as “fun,” and is more straightforward to answering questions. They also connect directly to standards, which is very telling of a student’s progress over time. Socrative can be used for both formative and summative assessment. It was helpful to have Socrative connect the assessments to standards as education is very much standards based and requires teachers to link every lesson to a standard. What I found most challenging was the fact that there were too many standards to choose from. Once a particular set of standards was selected, I could not filter out the standards I ...
